An ambitious new 13-week program designed to encourage and develop leadership skills and business success is underway in the northwest metro.
On March 6, the North Hennepin Area Chamber of Commerce kicked off its inaugural Leadership Academy at North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park.
"What we're trying to accomplish is to help build business and community leaders of tomorrow," said Steve Erickson, executive director of the North Hennepin Area Chamber of Commerce.
The Friday morning course, which is open to the public, kicked off with a keynote address by U.S. Rep. Erik Paulsen.
"If you challenge yourself to do new things in your business, ultimately you're going to be successful," Paulsen told the class. "It's about maximizing success, maximizing problem solving."
Over the next three months, more than 30 area business leaders, local government officials, and county leaders will present topics at the Leadership Academy that range from conflict resolution and negotiating to sales and marketing techniques and social media strategies.
"Many of them [speakers] are simply going to talk about how they got to where they are, the mistakes they've made, the lessons that they've learned," said Erickson.
Course participant, Mark Reese, president of Harmon Auto Glass in Maple Grove, is hoping to improve his leadership and business skills to help his company move forward.
"The minute that I say I know everything about a particular subject, I'm already obsolete," said Reese. "I'm hoping that I'm going to be able to gain a lot of information from other business leaders in the area, develop contacts with people and just grow my skill set, so that I can be a better leader at Harmon Auto Glass."
The Leadership Academy runs Friday mornings through May 29. There are still spaces available in the class. For more information visit North Hennepin Area Chamber of Commerce.
